PB2A: Part 1 & 2
Part 1:The academic discipline I chose is Forensic Science which is the application of science to criminal and civil laws, mainly -on the criminal side- during criminal investigation.
o Concepts:
o It involves a multi-disciplinary approach that covers everything from biological methods to analytical chemistry techniques.
o Issues:
o Misapplication of forensic science is the second most common contributing factor to wrongful convictions.
· Movements:
o “Wrongful Convictions and the Innocence Movement.” This movement is brought into the light to help free those who have been wrongfully convicted, and reform the criminal justice system. The subject of wrongful convictions has continued to grow, and the innocence movement’s influence has been very impressive. “Since the mid 1990s, new federal and state laws, and innovative police, prosecution, and forensic science programs - aimed at improving the accuracy of criminal conviction – have been enacted” (Zalman 1).
o Problems:
o Forensic science is the leading cause of mis-persecuted cases.
o Theories that researchers in this field study?:
o Edmond Locard, a French criminalist from the 1800s came up with formulation of Locard’s Exchange Principle, a theory that relates to the transfer of trace evidence between objects, stating that “every contact leaves a trace”. This theory states that when two objects come into contact with one another, each will take something from the other object or they will leave something behind.
Part 2: I am interested in the “Locard’s Exchange Principle” and the movement that his stirred up because of wrongful convictions.
