PB1A: Bumper Stickers (:
The genre I chose for this project builder is bumper stickers due to the fact that there are so many different types that all have different purposes. Bumper stickers are a great way for people to express their personalities and opinions harmlessly on certain matters or just to get their ideas out in the open.
This is example one of a funny bumper sticker....
I chose this sticker for example one because pretty much everyone’s favorite type of bumper stickers are the funny ones, we usually squint to read the print and then laugh at what it has to say. The target audience for this specific sticker would be students who can relate to it or parents who have children or know someone, even if it may be themselves, that come to mind when they see this. The purpose behind it is to try and make people laugh and to catch their eye. If somebody is having a bad day then I can almost guarantee it would be enough to put a smile on their face. This bumper sticker’s style is very short and sweet, also very simple which makes it easily relatable. The tone is light and carefree, very laidback as though they just pretty much don't care that they're not an honors student anymore. Some conventions for this would be: simple humor, high school or college students, people laughing.
The second bumper sticker I chose was one that bring awareness to safe driving and paying attention to the road. I chose this one to show that people have different opinions on many different things and a great way to express that for some people are through bumper stickers. The target audience for this sticker are reckless drivers, fast drivers, people who agree with the driving laws and also want people to drive safe. The purpose of these types of stickers are to, like I said before, bring awareness to reckless and safe driving and try to enforce people to follow the laws while on the road. The style is more straightforward, they are not beating around the bush with this sticker. The tone demanding and stricter compared to the funny bumper sticker in example one, the person is clearly trying to get their point across. Some conventions are: slow driving, soberness, honking.
The last bumper sticker I chose for my examples is a political one, these raise a lot of opinions and there are many different views on these matters. The main reason I chose this one to be the last one I did is because I think these types of bumper stickers bring the most reactions out of people while they are driving. The intended audience are people with strong political views or just people who have opinions on politics in general. I think the purpose of these bumper stickers are simply just for people to share their views, ideas, and opinions on politics. The context depends on the type of political sticker it is whether it is presidential based or local. Also, style goes along with that because it could be a sticker that says something about how much they hate somebody in office or the sticker could be based on their support for the government or the different parties, etc. The tone of this particular sticker is clearly disdain for our current President and they are showing their support for the Democratic party. The conventions for this bumper sticker are: politics, democratic, republican, the government, etc.
Now, what makes a bumper sticker a... bumper sticker? That is a great but also confusing question. Bumper stickers are obviously their own type of genre but if you dig a little bit deeper, you'll also realize that the different types of stickers are their own categories too. For example, the funny ones, political, serious, sad, etc. all fall into their own category because there are just so many different and unique ones that all have a purpose of their own. They are bumper stickers because of the different messages they get across to people without actually speaking words? If that makes any sense at all. What I mean is that the different categories of the bumper stickers each have their own mission and it is to get other people to see their views and opinions on certain things, maybe some people will relate and maybe some will want to throw their coffee at your window. Guess you'll just have to find out (:
Bumper stickers are a great genre, usually they are funny no matter the context. I like how you picked three different types of bumper stickers that all had different proposed, and explained all of them. Bumper stickers are so simple, but can cover so many topics from the simplest to more complex topics. Funny bumper stickers are the best, it's always nice to laugh. I agree that different bumper stickers fall into their own category, because they are all meant for a different purpose.
ReplyDeleteSarah,
ReplyDeleteLove the genre you chose! I agree with you, usually they can put a smile on people’s faces. I know most of the bumper stickers I’ve seen in my lifetime are meant to be funny and upbeat. I used to be neighbors with a guy who had bumper stickers covering the whole backside of his car. To him, they were all funny. It really showed his personality, in my opinion. For your second example, the awareness for safe driving and slowing down on the road I think might not take to the reckless drivers. Usually, people with road rage have something else on their mind, or they are just hot heads in general. Even though the people with those kinds of bumper stickers have the right idea, I’m not sure if they will get their point across to every driver on the road. There’s some people who just don’t want to hear it or don’t notice their aggressive driving habits for that matter.
Great genre choice. Your totally right, some bumper stickers are really funny and bring a smile to my face when I'm driving and I see a funny one. When I see a car with so many bumper stickers, I'm always so curious to see what each one says and see if there are any funny ones or ones that send a good message across! I love the ones that raise awareness for safe driving. I think that its really important for people to drive safe and I think that those bumper stickers send a great message. I'm sure that not everyone would live by safe driving advice, but even if one could it would make it a safer drive for everyone else on the road.
ReplyDeleteHey Sarah,
ReplyDeleteI liked the examples that you've chosen to use especially the first one. (I really don't like bumper stickers because they just look ugly on the car but that's my opinion.) Quick question why did you chose those 3 examples?
hey Sarah,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading about your blog since it it is something that I notice when I am driving round. This was a great genre choice! When I am on the roads, or sitting at a red light I often look around to see if there are any funny ones around. Whenever I do see one I feel like i need to read, so in my opinion they can be distracting. Now a comment I have about the people who have the messages about driving safe is that that really does not change anyone's mind or driving habits. They kind of contradict themselves, people have to take their eyes off the road to read what they say!!! Makes no sense. Im one of those people though im always curious.
Sarah, I think it is very cool that you chose a topic that most people want to read about and that provided a tad of humor. Bumper stickers are a great form of self expression and awareness. Whether it is intended to make a person laugh or enter a debate, there is no doubt that bumper stickers make people think.
