What Are My Annotation Techniques?

Annotating was something I struggled with when I was in elementary school and early high school due to the fact that I never really knew exactly what I was looking for. In my 11th grade English class, I finally learned and understood what I was searching for in articles, books, short stories, etc. Now, when I annotate there are some specific things I look for such as: bold font, definitions, questions?, and sentences that stand out to me
When I read parts I am confused about, I write question marks so I remember to go back to it and look deeper into it. Bold fonts stand out to me because it usually identifies what the subject of that paragraph is going to be or what the whole paper, article or story is going to be about. Definitions are always helpful whether that means that there are already definitions in the paragraphs or it could be that there are words I do not know. Then I would know to look them up and write the definition next to it so I can have a better understanding of what I'm reading. Another device I use while annotating is color coding, so take the Elbow article for example. When he discussed first order thinking, I highlighted in pink. When he went on to discuss second order thinking, I highlighted in yellow. This helps to keep things organized and keep your thoughts in order.
Some different annotation strategies that other people use are: notes repetitiveness, rhetorical devices, and explanations. Notes repetitiveness is usually important so if the author keeps repeating themselves on a certain topic, pay attention to that. The rhetorical devices some people use are ethos which is credibility, pathos which is emotional appeal, and last but not least logos which is logical. Explanations is another good one because who wants things to be super confusing and not be able to understand anything at all? Nobody so therefore explanations are always good.
