PB1B: Genre Generators

We are very lucky today to have access to so many different types of websites that allows us to: do, find, see, hear, etc…. so many different things. One genre of websites that are available to us are “Genre Generators”, which depending on the topic, can give you so many answers and possibilities. You simply fill out a couple questions, usually 5 at the most, and it gives you exactly what you are looking for. There are dozens of generators for us to choose from these days, it’s crazy. Can’t decide on a movie to watch? Well, don’t worry about that because there’s a generator for it! Don’t know what imaginary name to give yourself if you happened to find yourself in the Game of Thrones series? Well, don’t worry about that either because there just so happens to be a generator for that too! Although, some of them are very silly and highly unnecessary, they give everyone the chance to explore and find what they need.

The first website that I experimented with was SCIgen, which is a program that generates random Computer Science research papers, including graphs, figures, and citations. This gives you all of the bits and pieces you need for a successful paper, without you doing much work. Using this generator is fairly simple, you plug in the author of your choice that you would like to get information from and before you know it, a paper with enough examples, citations, and facts to last you a while. The conventions for this generator include: research, computers, graphs, authors, citations. This website is great for people who struggle with writing papers, specifically ones based on computer research. There’s no hassle to it, if you are not great and making graphs or creating citations, there is no need to worry because SCIgenhas you covered.

The second website I ventured onto was pandyland.net/random, which is a collection of all different types of comics. The comics that are generated from this website are completely random but always seems to be the same two guys and it is definitely a very creative and somewhat strange storyline. If you’re looking for a more serious but also funny comic, venture onto pandyland.net and take a look. The conventions for this website include: comics, humor, society, cursing. Unlike most comics you find online, this one is a little bit longer and will keep you entertained for quite some time. Most comics you read online or even in the newspaper are somewhat shorter and don’t keep you entertained for that long. The nice thing about some of these comics are that they can weirdly relate to some things in some way, whether it be your own personal life or things that are going on in society.

The last generator I ventured onto was called memegenerator.net which is a hilarious website that posts “memes” that people create and post. As soon as I got onto the website, I was already laughing at what was on the front page. Some of them are highly inappropriate but pretty much just downright, extremely funny. After I saw the front page, I continued to look around and see what else could entertain me and make me laugh. There are endless memes on this website that all relate to different things such as: movies, school, society, tv shows, family, etc. Unfortunately, just like every other website these days, you have to register to do certain things. After you register, you can post your own memes and create your own captions for the pictures based off of whatever you want. There are many different conventions for this genre since all of these memes are based off of different things. This generator is super creative and is so relative to our society today since memes are such a big thing for our generation.

Then, I decided to try and find one of my own that interests me which actually was mentioned in class. I am a huge Game of Thrones nerd, I am not even kidding like I am obsessed with that show. So, it only made sense that I went onto the generator that comes up with a fake name for me if I happened to be on the show. This website was called fantasynamesgenerator.com and then I just typed in Game of Thrones and it popped up. All you have to do is choose between whether you want a male or female name and it generates 10 different names for you. I clicked on female names and automatically 10 new names came onto the screen, I wasn't really a fan of any of them so I clicked again and decided on Liliyana Fossoway as my fake GOT name. This generator was by far my favorite one that I found my way onto given that I love that show so so much.

I think that venturing onto these websites can help someone better understand genre due to the fact that they show so many different types of genre. Each one of these generators performed something completely different than the other because there are just so many different things to come up with these days.

Comments

  1. I really liked how you decided to try and find a genre that interested you, which was the game of thrones fake name generator. I am also a huge game of thrones fan as well, so I checked that website out after I read this. I also liked how on of your paragraphs was about the comic strip genre because I could not find anything about this topic and really wanted to learn more about it.

  2. In my opinion you have one of the best ones and you explained it very well. I basically can get around these websites without even trying to figure it out just by reading your writing. The funny meme in the middle makes it more interesting to read.
